RESIDENTS of rwemigyina and Kenkombe near the Rwentondo garbage-dumping site in Kakoba, Mbarara municipality, have complained about the stinking garbage and aborted foetuses dumped in Rwentondo stream.
Kosia Twahirwa said Rwentondo stream, the only source of water for the livestock and domestic use in the area, stinks mainly due to the aborted foetuses that are often washed down the stream during the rainy season.
He said the cows reject the water due to the stench.

David Akadwanaho said diarrhoea had broken out in the area due to the poor hygiene of the stream.
He said the sewer from the 114-acre Rwentondo landfill had polluted the stream.

Mbarara municipal council principal environment officer Herbert Tumwebaze said they would plant trees around the dumping site to absorb the stinking gases, including the carbondioxide that destroys the ozone layer.
“We have a sh300m project and among the works that the council intends to do is extending the piped water and electricity to Rwentondo area. We also plan to introduce the garbage-sorting bags in the area,” he said.

The national environmental management authority’s western regional information officer, Jeconious Musingwire, said they were carrying out a study focusing on the quality of the water in Rwentondo.

He said the national forest authority would also plant more trees in Rwoho forest reserve.
