THE last time Mango Kobs met LG Rhinos in a league encounter was in the semi-finals of last year’s restructured league. Rhino won, getting their first major victory over the seven-time champions in several years.

Rhino went on to clinch second place when they lost to MTN Heathens in the final. But nothing has changed between these two clubs who meet again at Kampala Rugby Club as the 2006 Bell Lager League kicks off on Saturday.

The Kobs have always managed to come back after a major disappointment, and will be looking for some payback.

Rhino, on the other hand, have everything to prove that last year’s performance was no fluke.

Their main players are back from injury, apart from Boney Morro who is still nursing a shoulder injury and might need surgery.

But it will make for a very interesting match-up. Game of the day, no doubt.

A year ago, the encounter between defending champions MTN Heathens and ‘sister’ club Buffaloes at Kyadondo would have been seen as a warm up for the former, but after Buffaloes’ performance in the last two legs of the Sevens Circuit, it is anybody’s guess. Heathens are seeking revenge.

Hima Impis, who last won the league in 1996, play on Kyadondo’s second pitch against a resurgent Celtel Pirates side that shocked everybody by winning the last leg of last year’s Sevens Circuit.

In the Uganda Shield, Saracens take on Boks at Kyadondo, Sailors play Rams at Kampala, and Impis II travel to Entebbe to take on the Mongers.

The real fireworks start next week, with all Super Six teams in action. Kobs host Buffaloes, Rhinos play Hima Impis, and Heathens start their campaign against the Celtel Pirates.
