A man suspected to be part of a gang that has been dismantling and looting materials of the defunct Busoga railway line, valued at over sh15m, was on Tuesday charged in court.

Moses Nampala reports that Kakumba Isabirye and others still at large are said to have looted rail slippers at Mafubira, on the Jinja-Kamuli railway line in Jinja district on January 16.
The materials were property of Uganda Railways Corporation.

Prosecution said the suspects, armed with mattocks and spades, attacked the Jinja-Kamuli track (Busoga line) with the intention of dismantling it.

The suspects are said to have excavated the railway material and carried it to a den that also doubled as Kakumba’s apartment at Mafubira trading centre.

Residents, however, alerted the local authorities, who called in the Police.
Kakumba was arrested after 43 railway slippers were recovered from his apartment.

Kakumba, however, denied committing the offence when he appeared before Jinja Grade One magistrate Godfrey Gobi. Court remanded him in Kirinya prison until March 9 for hearing.
