THE Government has commended Col. Kizza Besigye for his decision to go to court to challenge the results of the 2006 presidential elections, which he lost.

Joyce Namutebi and Paul Tentena report that information state minister Dr. James Nsaba Buturo also asked Besigye’s FDC party to apologise for “putting the country on tension” during the elections.

He was responding to questions raised by journalists at the weekly press briefing at Nakasero on Wednesday.

The FDC leader, who lost to President Yoweri Museveni, told journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Tuesday that his lawyers had prepared a petition and were going to court within 10 days.

Buturo said, “There is no official communication from any official source that Besigye intended to contest the outcome” of the election but “we commend them (FDC) for that step which is different from what they were threatening to do.”

He said FDC put the country on tension and many Ugandans withdrew their money from banks, while many visitors left the country because of the tension.
