JAVELIN throwers Annet Kabasindi and Patrick Kibwota were a late inclusion on the athletics team to the Commonwealth Games, two days before the first batch departs for games due in Melbourne, Australia March 15-26.
The inclusions left the local athletics federation – UAF – with one athlete, sprinter Justine Bayiga, still to make it to the games.
Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president Maj. Gen. Francis Nyangweso approved the change after Chief De Mission, Peter Okot Omwony called from Australia to give the committee an update.
The inclusion puts athletics to ten members in Kabasindi, Kibwota, D. Okot, B. Kiprop, M. Kipsiro, W. Busienei, P. Egadu, W. Lukungu, J. Adar and D. Inzikuru.
The first batch of athletes departs this afternoon, ahead of the opening ceremony on March 15.
Nyangweso said at the last briefing at Grand Imperial Hotel on Saturday that the batch will have three disciplines: boxing, rugby and shooting players.
“We have a team of 49 athletes and 16 officials. It is a whole flight and you have to bargain for seats and that is why we are breaking them into groups,” said Nyangweso.
The second group of badminton, weightlifting, table tennis and swimming fly out on Thursday while the last batch comprising athletics and cycling travels March 15. The athletes are, meanwhile, yet to get their allowances.
