The ever-increasing power shortage has made sugar prices go up again, the general manager of Kakira Sugar Works, Richard Orr, has said, writes Aidah Nanyonjo.
“Power shortage has led to investing a lot in fuel to keep the factory running. This has impacted on the cost of production,” Orr said.
The factory price of a 100kg bag of sugar is sh62,000 while the wholesale price is sh68,000.
A kilogramme of sugar costs sh1,800 in most city suburb shops.
At St. Balikuddembe Market (Owino), a bag of 100 kilogrammes of sugar costs sh67,000, while a kilogramme costs sh1,700.
In supermarkets, it still costs sh1,600.
