ONLY 13,769 voters, representing 28% of the 49,255 registered voters in Gulu municipality, cast their votes on Monday during the mayoral election.

The election saw the LC3 chairperson for Bardege division, Christopher Acire, winning with 7,459 votes (54.7%).

Acire, a staunch supporter of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), stood as an independent candidate after refusing to go to the party primary elections.

Acire was supported by FDC officials, including MPs Reagan Okumu, Michael Ocula Nyeko and Gulu LC5-elect Norbert Mao.

Results released by the district electoral office put NRM candidate George Labeja second with 3,458 votes followed by the incumbent mayor, Charles Alex Okot Ojera from DP who garnered 1,448 votes. The official FDC candidate, Noah Opwonya Marcelino, trailed with 1,272 votes.

Opwonya on Sunday attacked Okumu and other FDC officials in Gulu district for sidelining him as the official FDC candidate.

He referred to Acire as a rebel who refused to attend the party primary elections and preferred to contest for the seat as an independent candidate.

On the eve of the voting day, Okumu urged all FDC supporters to turn up in big number and cast their votes in favour of Acire, saying Opwonya was weak, unpopular and could not make it.

Meanwhile, Frank Mugabi reports that a prominent businessman, Charles Asiki, was yesterday declared Arua municipality mayor.
