A GIANT female python believed by local people to be a reincarnation of the spirits occupying river Mayanja, has been relocated to a new reptile farm in Entebbe.

In a three-hour operation on Tuesday, the python was loaded onto a wooden crate at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) and taken to its new sanctuary.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) three weeks ago took the snake to UWEC after fighting and overpowering a curious crowd and believers that had camped at the edge of Lubigi swamp.

UWA’s Vernice Mirembe said after the snake was taken to its new home, UWA had allowed Tropical Fauna to get a male python for breeding purposes.

Previously, UWA used to release rescued reptiles and snakes to its protected areas and crocodiles to a private farm at Buwama.

Mirembe said the pythons would be used for education and tourism.
The farm, with its holding grounds at Busambaga village on the shores of Lake Victoria, has a large fence made of wire netting forming an enclosure for the snake.

“We have inspected the farm and think it would provide a safe place for the animals to live and increase appreciation of nature,’’ Mirembe said.

Mirembe said beliefs that the snake harboured spirits were a myth.
The snake had attracted residents of Kyengera, Bulenga, Busega and Nateete.
