Fifty Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools will receive primary seven textbooks for all subjects under Celtel’s social responsibility programme dubbed ‘Build our nation.’

Under the programme launched on Tuesday by Prime minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, Celtel has partnered with the ministry of education in the project in which schools will be randomly picked.

“Education is fundamental in empowering communities and securing the future. We hope by supporting regeneration of facilities in schools and educational projects, Celtel can make a difference,” said Martin Pieters, Celtel’s chief executive.

The sh150m project was first launched in Tanzania in 2004, and has since been embraced by other Celtel operations in Africa.

Pieters said Celtel considered education a vital resource that is fundamental for Africa’s economic and social breakthrough.

Nsibambi said education was central to both human and national development, and thanked Celtel for the initiative.
