UGANDA People’s Congress (UPC) will not take up any post in president Yoweri Museveni’s multiparty government, writes Madinah Tebajjukira.

Addressing a press conference yesterday in kampala, Patrick Rubaihayo (right), the UPC national chairman, said the party would focus their energy on Parliament.

“We want to concentrate on Parliament as members. In Parliament, you debate issues and if it is a wrong issue, we correct the government. We shall be part of governance of this country, but not government,” Rubaihayo said.

Rubaihayo said they would help the government sort out political misunderstanding. He said UPC was compiling a national report about the recent elections, after which it would embark on national recruitment of members to strengthen its support countrywide. The party is targeting youth who will fight election malpractice in the 2011 elections, he said.

“Now that elections are over, we want to embark on a national recruitment exercise. It has been long since the party last recruited members in 1985. This time we want to know our real supporters so that we give them party cards,” he said.
