THE Aids Integrated Model (AIM) District Programme has spent over sh1.4b in the last five years to support the fight against HIV/AIDS in Rukungiri district.
The district director of health services, Dr. Zephyr Karyabakabo, said this on Tuesday in Rukungiri stadiumat the closure of the five-year USAID-funded programme which has been operating in 16 districts.


Lorry kills 2
IGANGA — One person died on the spot while another died in Iganga hospital after a school truck ferrying 10 prisoners from Kiyunga county prison to work on a farm in Kamuli overturned. The 8:00am Monday accident near Kiyunga town, involved a truck belonging to St. Patrick Kigulu Girls Primary School that was taking prisoners to work on the headmistress, Sister Jane Namwase’s farm at Mbulamuti.

Victims okay
KAMPALA — A total of 46 victims of the collapsed City of the Lord Church had been discharged by yesterday, Mulago hospital authorities said. This leaves the number of victims still in the hospital at 20, hospital spokesperson Eliphaz Ssekabira said. Pastor Godfrey Luwagga’s Kalerwe-based church collapsed last Wednesday, killing 28 people dead and injuring about 100.

Minister out
KINSHASA, Thursday — The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Planning Alexis Thambwe Mwamba resigned from his government job and his party, a former rebel movement, saying he wanted to stand in elections. Thambwe had held the post since 2003.

Medical aid
Three institutions in Masindi have received assorted equipment worth over sh3m from the Rotary Club of Stourbridge in the UK.
Sallie Wareing of the Rotary Club of Masindi yesterday said the beneficiaries of the donation were Masindi SS, Masindi Hospital and Masindi Centre for the Handicapped at Ikoba.

Court frees
A woman who reportedly tried to let a Chinese murder suspect escape to China was yesterday set free by Buganda Road Court.
Phiona Nabukenya of Kansanga was acquitted after the State failed to bring witnesses to testify against her.
The case was on a last adjournment, said magistrate Susan Kanyange.

MP pledges
BUSIA — Samia Bugwe North MP-elect Stephen Mugeni has said lagging behind in development would end with Aggrey Awori’s reign. Describing Awori as an enemy of development as he addressed journalists yesterday, Mugeni said the constituency had been ‘misrepresented’. He said service delivery and resource mobilisation would be his priority.

Kulubya lists
KAMPALA — John Kulubya Ssenseko, who lost in the mayoral race, is compiling results to show irregularities and malpractices that characterised the elections. Speaking from his office on Namirembe road yesterday, Kulubya said he did not accept the results but he would not petition. He said 12 members of his household voted at the same station as him but he got only five votes.

Polls halted
KAMPALA — The Electoral Commssion (EC) has put on hold the Adjumani district woman MP elections. Commissioner Joseph Biribonwa said yesterday that they were waiting for tempers to cool before a nomination date and campaign programme are announced. One of the contestants, Clara Vuni, died in an accident.

Interpol hunt
KAMPALA — The international police (Interpol) has issued a red notice for run-away soldier Lt. William Scott Nkorenta, who is suspected of murdering Cissy bagendana and James Habukiriro, the serious crime Police chief, at a pub in Bukoto city suburb last year. The red notice seeks the arrest of a wanted person with a view to extraditing him. Police sources said the notice was issued in December last year to all the 184 Interpol member countries. Habukiriro was shot dead after he intervened in a fracas in which Nkorenta was involded.
