Defence chiefs meet in Arusha

UGANDAN defence chiefs are in Arusha, Tanzania to attend the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence.

By Milton Olupot UGANDAN defence chiefs are in Arusha, Tanzania to attend the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence.

The meeting that started yesterday will review the status of the implementation of the previous sectoral council of ministers decisions and their impact in the areas of cooperation in defence among the partner states’ armed forces.

A statement from the information and public relations office, yesterday named achievements so far registered by the defence sector as joint peace support exercises, confidence-building mea-sures among the partner states’ armed forces and availing training slots in military training institutions for military students by the partner states.

The chiefs in attendance from Uganda include the defence state minister Ruth Nankabirwa, defence PS Brigadier Noble Mayombo, UPDF Chief of Defence Forces General Aronda Nyakairima, Joint Chief of Staff Brig. Robert Rusoke, Defence Adviser Uganda High Commission in Tanzania Col. John Mugume and UPDF Director of Training Col. George Igumba.

The Tanzanian team is led by the defence and national service minister, Prof. Alhaji Juma Kupaya, while the Kenyan team is led by defence state minister Njenga Karume.

Defence liaison officers Col. Matiku of Tanzania, Brig. Fred Tolit of Uganda and Col. Hillary Kioko of Kenya attended. Senior officers are also expected to attend.
