The Police have asked the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to sanction Fox Odoi’s file so that a criminal summon can be issued to him to appear in court before the expiry of his bail extension.

Patrick Onyango, the assistant Police spokesman, in a statement on Thursday, regretted reports that the Police had not preferred charges against Odoi (right), President Yoweri Museveni’s senior legal adviser, over harassing Tororo voters.

“We are surprised to hear that the Police have failed to prefer charges against Odoi yet we completed our work two weeks ago and submitted the file to the DPP. We are awaiting the DPP’s advice,” he said.

He added: “The Uganda Police Force is ready to follow this case up to its logical conclusion.”

Odoi recently hit the headlines after he was pictured brandishing a gun over bare-chest men on polling day.

He was arrested on February 28 but was granted bond after 48 hours in Police custody without being charged.

Odoi’s file was not in court last Wednesday. Buganda Court Chief Magistrate Margaret Tibulya adjourned the case for three months.

Onyango said the Inspector general of Police, Maj Gen Kale Kayihura, called for Odoi’s file from Tororo and assigned it to senior detectives, who took statements from witnesses.

Onyango said the Police submitted the file to the DPP two weeks ago.
The Police investigation found that the people in the mini-bus whom Odoi suspected to be illega voters were residents. Two of them had voted before Odoi intercepted them.

Onyango said, “The DPP’s office promised our officers that they would finish studying the case before Wednesday.”

On Wednesday, State Attorney Hellen Wenene told court that investigations were still going on.
Odoi admitted effecting the arrest with a gun, which he said was a private firearm, licensed and meant for his security.
