KENYAN star Jacob Okello is among the foreign entries for the launch of the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) at the weekend.

Okello and four other countrymen have confirmed participation in a 72-hole stroke play event that will set in motion the UPGA formed last month.

Dismus Ndiza, Kopan Timbe and Charan Thethy will also join professionals from Tanzania and Uganda at the Kitante course.
The captain of the Ugandan professionals Deo Akope, said the event could attract about 15 players.

“We are waiting for more confirmations especially from Kenya,” Akope said yesterday.
Stanley Sanga, who joined the paid ranks a fortnight ago, is so far the sole entrant from Tanzania.

Akope will lead the Ugandans who became professionals in December after brilliant amateur careers. The group also has Stephen Kasaija, Charles Yokwe, Denis Anguyo, Godfrey Mande and Sadi Atibu.

Last week, Akope and Yokwe launched their new trade at the Kenya Open that is part of the European Challenge Tour. But they later missed the cut.

Kenya has 25 professionals, the highest number in East Africa followed by Uganda with six and Tanzania with three.

UPGA is looking at eight to 12 events on the Uganda circuit this year. The players will also compete in Kenya and in South Africa for a start.
