MOROTO resident district commissioner (RDC) Lt. Robert Nambafu has criticised Kampala City Council (KCC) for repatriating destitute karimojong without the participation of Moroto officials.
Nambafu said the repatriation of 260 destitutes to Kobulin resettlement camp in Bokora county on Sunday was done without their knowledge.
“It is very unfair for KCC to have treated the destitute Karimojong as if they were non-Ugandans and sub-humans. KCC ought to have liaised with Moroto to prepare for the return of the destitutes. The council ought to have linked up with us so that we put measures in place to receive them. If there was a mistake they (destitutes) committed, KCC ought to have informed us,” Nambafu said.
City authorities rounded up the destitutes and bundled them into two Gateway buses that transported them to Kobulin.
The city welfare officer, Dan Mujjugizi, said the destitutes had become a public nuisance.
“Rounding up the karimojong has been a continuous exercise,” he said.
Mujjugizi said KCC spent sh4m to hire the buses that transported the destitutes, and also spent money to round them up.
He said, “We rounded them up over a period of time, interviewed them and maintained them at our collection centres before repatriating them.”
