It is said you can know a Ugandan by the type of mobile phone he or she mobile has. “Some buyers will be pleased to take a more expensive mobile phone,” says Maria Naddumba, a saleswoman at Dembe Central, a mobile phone store on Luwum Street. “People basically look for very slim lightweight phones that have fancy ring tones, colour screens as well as E-mail access.” Here below are the five most sought-after mobile phones in town.

Motorola V3 Razr
Sought-after by most middle class stylish people in town, the Motorola V3 is one of the latest slim phones. It can slip well into a lady’s evening purse. And it comes with a multi-colour screen and, above all, else a digital camera for taking pictures. It costs about sh500,000.

Samsung D500
A multimedia box, the D500 has been hyped everywhere in town around because of its unique slide technology that shields the buttons ‘underneath’ the screen. It also has a fancy colour screen, polyphonic ring tones, an MP3 player as well as a digital camera that can well record short motion pictures. And best of all, it is triband, which means you can use it anywhere in the world. It is a favourite of businessmen. It costs about sh600,000.

Sony Ericsson W800i
Going for sh800,000, it has a host of multimedia features –– digital FM radio, walkman, MP3 player and camera –– all in a not-so-flashy headset. The W800i can store as much as a dozen CD’s worth of music. And with it you can receive calls while playing the music simultaneously. It is more popular among men than ladies.

LG U880
Once rare, the LG U880 has become very popular among people who are quite learned in information technology and want to keep up with the advances. This 3G, (3rd generation) phone has everything the Nokia 3230 has, and the some more. It can host video calls where you can talk to someone while watching them live! But you will have to dole out a million shillings for it.

Nokia 3230
Originally bought by upscale people who went after every new thing in town, the Nokia 3230 soon became more popular because of the myriad features it had. (It is reckoned that many of the people who own it have never bothered to exploit all its features). This phone can access the Internet just as fast as a PC. And besides the camera and the music, it also has a host of other ultra-modern features like voice dialling and a tunes studio where you can compose your own trademark ring tones. It costs sh700,000 in town.
