THE public service ministry has launched a campaign to get rid of ghost workers. A statement issued on Friday by permanent secretary Jimmy Lwamafa said heads of department would authenticate the existence of staff on their payrolls.

“Chief administrative officers (CAOs), town clerks and medical superintendents of regional hospitals are hereby informed that the Inter-Ministerial taskforce on payroll management will be carrying out a payroll cleaning exercise,” the statement read.

The exercise that will cover district local governments, municipal councils, town councils, referral hospitals, district health centres and government-aided schools and tertiary institutions, starts today and ends on April 26.

The exercise will start with a briefing of heads of department in districts.
Lwamafa appealed to CAOs to ensure the smooth running of the exercise.
