THE three East African heads of state are to launch the East African Community (EAC) anthem at the EAC summit due for April 5 in Arusha, a statement issued by the EAC secretariat has said.

“Heads of state will launch the third EAC Development Strategy for the years 2006-2010, launch the EAC partnership fund and the EAC anthem,” said the statement issued recently on the community’s website.

It says the leaders will also witness a ceremony planned to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the EAC Secretariat, which was launched on March 14, 1996 in Arusha.

The Seventh Summit of the East African Community will be held in Arusha on April 5, 2006.

Presidents Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda, Mwai Kibaki of Kenya and Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania are expected to attend the summit meeting.

Others presidents expected are Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and chief executives of several regional and international organisations.

The statement said the leaders would receive a progress report of the Council of Ministers of the East African Community on the activities of the EAC undertaken during the past year and consider a progress report on fast tracking the East African Federation.

They will appoint and witness the swearing-in of a new Secretary General, replacing Amanya Mushega.
