UMEME is to close four branches in Kampala, a statement has said. The branches are Bugolobi, which was closed on March 6, Wandegeya, Nakulabye and Kabalagala that will be closed today.

The statement, which was issued on Wednesday, advised consumers who had been dealing with the above branches to pay through the nearest banks.

“The company is undergoing transformation aimed at improving services. The restructuring involves closing some branches,” a source said this week.

The source said Umeme plans to encourage clients to start paying in banks rather than the company’s branches.

“We want to reduce congestion. It is not only in Kampala, where the process is going on. However, nobody should be scared that the company will lay off workers,” the source said.
