MBALE Tigers Table Tennis Club (MTTTC) has received a boost of sh51m from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to help develop the game of table tennis in Mbale for the next two years.

Speaking to The New Vision in Mbale, the club director Emmanuel Matsyetsye said the grant, received through Laupa Lunning, is to help identify children, train and expose them to table tennis competitions in Uganda and neighbouring countries.

He said the club has been able to increase pilot centres from five to seven and currently the number of children who attend table tennis training sessions has shot up from 50 three years ago to 300.

“Since the club opened in 2003, the youthful players have lifted 65 trophies from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi,” Matsyetsye said, adding that two girls Amina Kibone (above) and Asha Nambozo represented Uganda at the just concluded Commonwealth Games.

He however regretted that Ugandan team officials did not allow the girls’ coach Jude Mutete to travel with them.
