THE East African Community (EAC) is seeking $4.6m (about sh8.3b) for the development of the region’s infrastructure, a top official said recently.

“The estimated cost of implementing the EAC component of customs and trade is $2.2m and $2.4m for transport,” said Dr. Kipyego Cheluget, the EAC’s deputy secretary general in charge of projects and programmes.

He said the customs and trade component includes strengthening of customs legal and institutional capacity for effective implementation of the Customs Union.

Others are enhancing trade facilitation to promote intra and inter- regional trade and to support transit infrastructure initiatives to enhance transit traffic flow.
Cheluget said the initiative would develop a strategic plan for EAC.
