KAPCHORWA, Arua and Wakiso districts are expected to dictate when the national primary schools athletics championships get underway today, writes Samson Opus and Salume Among.

The three renown for their long distances feats are expected to put up spirited shows in the 5000m and 6000m races at the four-day meet at Soroti Boma ground.

Hosts Soroti, Apac, Gulu, Lira, Katakwi, Mbale and Mukono are among the other strong contenders who have been in serious training.

The organisers have set stringent measurers to curb fake entries. “All participants will be screened, so it is bound to be a thrilling event,” technical official Martin Okwir said.

Soroti was the first casualty with 20 of its athletes screened out yesterday. Screening committee boss, Stephen Katadi blamed the district officials for not targeting the right athletes.

The meet finals on Saturday will be preceded by the election of the National Primary Schools Games executive committee.
