COMMONWEALTH Games 10000m gold medallist Boniface Kiprop beat off competition from 3000mSC gold medallist Dorcus Inzikuru to win the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) monthly award for March at National Theatre yesterday.

Kiprop (right) polled 470 points against 370 votes to defeat Inzikuru who was also nominated for the award following her victory at the Melbourne games.

Kiprop, whose medal was his first in the seniors competition, over weighed Inzikuru’s after members argued that it was not a surprise she (Inzikuru) won having entered as a leading favourite.

“Kiprop had a tougher field given the number of competitors while Inzikuru had few entrants and she was the champion of the inaugural steeplechase in Helsinki (Finland) so her victory was expected,” USPA chairman Joseph Kabuleta said after the voting exercise.

The meeting commended the Commonwealth Games boxing bronze medallist Martin Mubiru and the national rugby sevens team that won two games before falling off the race in Melbourne.

Also commended were Kampala City Council Leopards basketball team, rally driver Emma Katto and Brethren College Kiryagonja girls volleyball team for their good form in the month.

The meeting was informed that former Arua, Villa, KCC, Mbale Heroes’ and Cranes player, Haruna Mawa, had died but a friend, one Francis Xavier told The New Vision Mawa is alive.
