Mbale LC5 chairman Bernard Mujasi has criticised the policy on the protection of the Mt. Elgon forest park, saying it had failed to address the interests of the district’s farming communities.
Speaking at a workshop for eastern district leaders in Mbale recently, Mujasi said the policy’s emphasis on protecting trees and wild animals did not recognise the local communities that have been dependent on the forest over the past centuries.

THE UPDF soldiers on Wednesday combed the bushes in Kakindo in the belt of Semliki National Park in bundibugyo, searching for the bodies of ADF rebels, following a fierce battle on Tuesday.
UPDF 2nd division publicist Lt. Tabaro Kiconco said the 3:00pm fight occurred when the UPDF soldiers of the 503 battalion exchanged fire with 12 rebels. Two rebels were killed.

SECURITY was yesterday tightened in the city outskirts of Rubaga division ahead of the Supreme Court ruling on the election petition filed by FDC chief Kizza Besigye seeking to nullify president Museveni’s re-election.
Special Police constables, Local Defence Unit guards and traffic Police officers were deployed heavily in areas around the court in Mengo.

Nile Broadcasting services (NBS) TV owned by trade state minister Nathan Igeme Nabeta started testing its signals earlier this year to the excitement of residents.

THE head of land division in the judiciary, Justice Moses Mukiibi, on Monday said the judiciary would replace lay Grade II magistrates with legally-qualified ones to ensure quicker and sufficient service delivery.
