On the same night, league sponsors telecommunications giants MTN unveiled an increased sh80m package for the 2006 season. This year’s package that is inclusive of team kits is sh20m more compared to last year’s sh60m.

While speaking on behalf of MTN, Public Relations Officer Tina Byaruhanga stated MTN’s support to the basketball fraternity. “As a result, we have started seeing the reality of good sportsmen representing the country at regional and global tournaments.”

Also in attendance of the opening ceremony was MTN promotions manager Aggrey Kagonyera, assistant secretary general Justin Ligyalingi and FUBA chairman John Simbwa.

Diminutive Salim Ali, combined flare and precisive decision making to give Falcons a taste of what they would be up against in the MTN basketball league.

Ali scored 29 points and Paul Mwaka added 16 as Marines rallied for a 95-86 opening victory over Falcons, Thursday at Lugogo Indoor stadium.

Former league champions Falcons who were tipped to win the league opener, were unable to curb stellar efforts from another Marine combination of Albert Aciko and Carl Mugalu who bagged a total of 28 points.

With a blitz of national team players Henry Malinga (29 points), Eric Malinga (15 points) and Sam Obol (11 points), Falcons failed to display a national team combination to keep the Marines at bay.

In the ladies game, A-1 Challenge sent a clear message of their intentions to maintain status quo as league champions, with a 42-33 victory over MUK-Sparks.

Mavita Ali had nine points and Elizabeth Kiiza scored seven as A-1 Challenge posted an opening league victory.
