RESIDENTS of Nkondo parish in Kabwoya sub-county Hoima district are constructing a school at Kyehooro village. The money was collected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) through fining herdsmen who trespassed with cattle in the Kabwoya, Kaiso-Tonya Wild game Reserve.

Meeting UWA officials last month, cattle keepers and the local community resolved that every herd found grazing in the reserve would be arrested and the owner fined sh10,000.

UWA officials said the money collected was given to the community as a contribution towards local development.
The cattle is seized by game rangers and handed to LC officials who fine the owners.

“One week after the agreement we have already collected sh600,000 and the residents have agreed to use the money to construct a primary school at kyehoro,” said Kasangaki Ofungi, the Kyehoro LC1 chairman.

The fine doubles every time cattle of the same person are found in the reserve.
“Our interest is not money, but to stop interference with the reserve,” said William Mwesigye, the assistant warden.
