SEVENTEEN schools in the eastern region on Tuesday benefited from Celtel’s social responsibility programme dubbed “build our nation”.

The schools, one from each district in the region, will each receive P.7 text books for all subjects, while other classes receive exercise books.

Over sh150m has been invested in the project.

Yesse Oenga, the Celtel Uganda managing director, said the company believed education is fundamental in empowering African communities to secure a collective future.

“We hope that through this programme, we can make a difference in the community, thereby continuing to make life better wherever we are,” he said.

The campaign is a Celtel international initiative that was first launched in Tanzania and then embraced in other countries where Celtel operates.
The company is partnering with the Ministry of education in the project, together with a number of local publishers.

The Minister of Education, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, said education is central to both human and national development and that it is ranked second among the eight 2015 millennium development goals.
