A CARETAKER government has taken over the Makerere University guild office until the petition against the guild president-elect, Gerald karuhanga, is disposed of.

The dean of students, John Ekudu, said the interim government comprising the dean, the guild speaker and chairpersons of all university halls, was by law allowed to run the guild office in such circumstances.

Asked what would happen in case Karuhanga’s presidency was nullified, Ekudu could not rule out a re-run.

“We are waiting for the University Election petitions Tribunal results. The tribunal will decide whether we hold a re-run or the runner up (Haruna Ssekabira) is declared winner,” he said.

Ekudu said the tribunal results were expected by yesterday evening.

The university rules require that a petition is heard and disposed of in four days from the day it was filed.

Ssekabira, the runner up in the March 20 guild elections, sought court’s assistance claiming that the tribunal had failed to dispose of the petition within the stipulated four days.

Ssekabira claims that Karuhanga illegally stood for the university guild presidency because he had failed some examinations.

Following Ssekabira’s complaint, the High Court suspended the swearing-in of Karuhanga that was slated for Friday, until disputes surrounding his nomination were resolved.

Earlier, Karuhanga, who beat 12 contestants, accused the Government of meddling in the university politics and being behind the petition to nullify his presidency.

Efforts to reach Karuhanga, who stood on the FDC ticket, were yesterday fruitless as he repeatedly switched off his cell phone.
