UGANDA Olympic Committee (UOC) president Major General Francis Nyangweso has said that the number of athletes being sponsored under the Olympic Solidarity programme is to increase after a great performance of junior stars at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

In an interview over the future of Ugandan sports after a youngster-dominated team at the games, Nyangweso said it is time local sports federations updated their athletes in the run-up to the Beijing 2008 Olympics and London 2010 Commonwealth Games programmes.

“All these games are organised in preparation for the Olympic Games. It’s a stepping stone and that is why we took more disciplines (to Australia). It is now up to the federations to send us the names of those people that they think are capable of making it to the Olympic Games,” said Nyangweso.

He asserted that among the plans they have for the stars is to see that they facilitate them to a number of international games for exposure.

“What has been lacking is the fact that Ugandan stars have not been participating in international events. National federations are supposed to give us a list of those athletes they think have a chance of making it to the Olympics. We will financially help them travel to events like the international championship, World Cup, continental championships among others,” insisted Nyangweso.
