THE International motorsport governing body’s regional expert has cautioned drivers at next week’s Alpha Pearl of Africa Uganda rally to prepare for a stringent check of their cars.

FIA technical delegate Viren Goricha warned drivers to ensure that they conform to FIA standards. He said he will not hesitate to throw any driver out of the rally.

An official at the Federation of Motor Clubs of Uganda (FMU) revealed yesterday that Nairobi-based Goricha had written to them to ensure that competitors meet the minimum standards for an ARC race, including right helmets, turbo chargers and fireproof racing suits.

Local technical officials Joshua Mayanja and Yusuf Ahmed were immediately assigned to assess crews that had entered the rally.

“The man doesn’t want to be hated by Ugandans over easy things they should know. He has warned us in advance and now Yusuf and Mayanja are going around drivers’ workshops sensitising them,” an FMU official said.

The Alpha Dairy Products sponsored has attracted 30 entrants from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Belgium.

* The greatest rally driver Kenya and Uganda ever produced, Shekhar Mehta,62, died yesterday in London.

Ugandan-born Mehta won the Safari rally in 1973, 1979, 1980 and 1981.
