JINJA — The NRM branch intends to take disciplinary action against party members who allegedly supported opposition candidates in the last parliamentary and local council elections. A statement issued by branch chairman Sam Muwumba said the final decision would be made when the said individuals appear before the disciplinary committee. Muwumba was responding to press reports that some district NRM members had been dismissed.

Chief killed
NAKAPIRIPIRIT — The district community development officer, Peter Ogut, was on Thursday shot dead in an ambush on the Nakapiripirit-Amudat road. Four other passengers were injured in the ambush on a convoy in which resident district commissioner Michael Bwalatum Okiring and other district officials were travelling to Pokot (Upe) county to mobilise the community on the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) programme.

Date fixed
KAMPALA — Court has fixed May 2 to hear the case of the proprietor of the ill-fated church which collapsed early last month, killing 28 people. This followed Pastor Godfrey Luwaga’s co-accused, George Kawalya, the site engineer, failing to appear in court.

Dons slam
LAGOS, Friday — Nigerian university teachers on Thursday slammed an alleged plan by President Olusegun Obasanjo’s loyalists to amend the constitution to allow him run for a third term in office. The Academic Staff Union of Universities condemned “the charade in the National Assembly under the guise of constitution amendment, to secure for the current president another 12 years’ rule.” The ASUU said they rejected all styles, iincluding the the Ugand-style, of manipulating the constitution to subvert democratic change.
