Miss Kyambogo hates people who spit in public

Apr 16, 2006

Viola Nakiganda, 20, was crowned the new Miss Kyambogo on Friday April 7. Sebidde Kiryowa and Miles Rwamiti talked to her.
Question: How did it feel being crowned in darkness?
Answer: We had a generator on standby but I felt tortured. However, these things happen.

What is the most exciting thing about being Miss Kyambogo?
I am an artiste and a fashion designer. In my trade, exposure is everything. Being Miss Kyambogo gives me that. I believe this is a good platform to launch and take my talent to greater heights.

What do you think about men?
All men are the same. They are big babies. They are very touchy. They are easily offended and they take things way too seriously. When you offend a man’s ego, he will not let go. He’ll torture himself forever over that.
Tell us about your man.
He is called Robert. He’s into private business. We have been together for five years. We met at my sister’s graduation party. I love this guy. He’s kind, humble and understands me. He also respects me as a woman and he’s not the jealous type. We spend a lot of quality time together.

Was he okay with you taking part in the Miss Kyambogo?
At first, he was opposed to it but then we had a serious talk and reached a compromise.
And your parents?
They too had refused at first but I talked to them.

Let us in on your fashion secrets.
I do everything from my hair to my nails at Namayanja’s Salon on Mutasa Kafeero Plaza. I use hair relaxer for my hair. I like to let my hair down. I don’t like puffs and perms. But, I braid my hair. I feel comfortable in pants and shorts. I also like casual sleeveless tops. For my skin, I don’t apply anything special. It’s natural.

Which habit do you hate most?
I hate people who spit in public. It’s disgusting and I believe, depending on where you are, uncultured. I can understand it in the case of pregnant women but it is inexcusable for people to do it in the open.
