THE Northern Bypass will be a dual carriage way at a later phase, the Road Agency Formation Unit’s engineering director Shabir Alidina has said.

Alidina said initially, the dual carriage way will connect the Busega round-about to a new one.

The new round-about will be built because the Busega round-about is too high to connect to the bypass, which is low.

The new round-about will accommodate the end of the Northern Bypass.

Alidina said the bypass cannot be connected directly to the round-about because of technical difficulties and high demolition costs.

“The design engineer opted not to connect the bypass directly to the existing round-about because it is a three-arm round-about. To connect a fourth arm would have led to demolition of property, yet residents dislike it,” he said.

“Secondly, the existing round-about is at a high level compared to the bypass’ level at the swamp. To put the bypass at the level of the roundabout will increase the earthworks and therefore the costs,” Alidina said.

The 13km bypass is funded by the European Development Fund and is expected to reduce traffic jams in the city centre.

It will have the first flyovers in the country that will be put over bridges and road crossings.
