KAMPALA — Justice Peter Onega, the chairperson of the Amnesty Commission, was on Thursday discharged from Mulago hospital. Hospital spokesman Eliphaz Ssekabira said the 56-year-old judge ‘truely looked fine’. Onega, who collapsed on a plane enroute Entebbe Airport form Nairobi, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on April 19 suffering from dehydration and breathing problems.

Refugees off
KAMPALA — The long delayed return of southern Sudanese refugees sheltering in Uganda will start next week after security in some areas improved, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on wednesday. Uganda hosts at least a quarter of a million uprooted Sudanese, more than any other country. The first returns were due to start earlier this month but were put on hold after two attacks on UN compounds in March.

Two charged
KAMPALA — Two security guards suspected of robbing sh90.4m from Crane Forex Bureau were on Thursday charged with aggravated robbery and remanded in Luzira Prison until May 11. Ronald Onyango and Paul Munyambazi, both of Kinawataka, were charged at Buganda Road Court before Stella Amabilis who did not allow them to plead to the charge.

Father kills
SHENYANG — The father of a paraplegic woman in China’s Liaoning province was given a lenient sentence earlier this week for fulfiling his daughter’s wishes and killing her. “The sentence was handed down with leniency, as the court considered the particulars of the defendant’s appeal,” said Sun Wenjie, lawyer of Wang Tinghe. He was sentenced to three years in jail with three years of probation.

Ferry sinks
NAIROBI — Tanzanian Police said on Friday that a ferry had sunk in Lake Victoria, with an unknown number of passengers killed. A Tanzanian newspaper, Mwananchi, said 28 people, including eight crew members, were killed. The paper named the boat as MV Nyamanga. Tanzania Police spokesperson Juma Mtumwa, said, “People have drowned but I have no more information.”
