Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi on Saturday wedded 95 couples at St. John’s Cathedral in Kabarole.
“Never in the history of the Church of Uganda or in this country has a diocese or church carried out a mass wedding. Rwenzori Diocese, you have made history in Uganda,” he said amid applause from the christians. Most of the newly-weds were the elderly.
The wedding was also part of celebrations to mark the cathedral’s 110th anniversary.
Orombi has been on a pastoral visit to the diocese and has visited Kyenjojo, Kamwenge and Bundibugyo. The church was packed to capacity and a large tent was put outside to cater for the excess guests.
Choirs from different church parishes entertained the newly-weds.
Orombi was assisted by Rwenzori bishop the Rt. Rev. Benezeri Kisembo and the dean, Patrick Kyaligonza.
Standing at the altar, Orombi told the couples to raise their rings which he later blessed. “I Luke Orombi do proclaim you husband and wife.”
Orombi praised the newly-weds for having the courage to engage in holy matrimony.
“You have done very well and this is the first historical couple we have in Uganda. Few people have been wedded by the Archbishop and the Bishop. You should be proud of it,” he said.
