THE special presidential assistant for special duties, Dr Elizabeth Nabatanzi, has been ejected from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) headquarters on Kyadondo Road in Kampala, reports Milton Olupot.
Nabatanzi protested to the NRM Secretary General, Amama Mbabazi, about what she called the humiliating manner in which she was thrown out of the office. In a letter, Nabantazi accused the party’s deputy national treasurer, Singh Katongole, of masterminding her eviction.
Nabatanzi admitted on Saturday that she wrote the letter but declined to divulge its details.
However, NRM publicist Ofwono Opondo yesterday dismissed Nabatanzi’s claims as nonsense.
“She has had no office at all on Plot 10 Kyadondo Road. We have about four rooms shared by a number of officials.
“Some people have been away since the elections (in February). When they returned, she did not want them. When they insisted on staying, she moved out. Her character is just bad,” he said.
“After all she is not supposed to have an office at the NRM headquarters. She is a presidential assistant although she is a party supporter,” Opondo said.
In her letter of April 25, Nabatanzi accused Katongole of instructing the administrator to throw out her belongings. “He told me to ask the President for another office or go to State House,” she said. She said she did not wish to be dragged into the “power struggle and bickering.”
“Please, Mr. Mbabazi, we need some PR here to keep this party functioning and professional. Otherwise, if leaders behave like this, what do you expect of the performance of the mobilisers at Kyadondo? Mobilisers were not happy with what they saw and heard. This was a big shame on Mr. Singh’s part because we all kept quiet in awe. He acted so militarily,” she said.
The Weekly Observer reported that relations between Mbabazi and the NRM vice-chairman, Moses Kigongo, were low reportedly because Kigongo feels Mbabazi has usurped national treasurer Ndawula Kaweesi’s powers.
Sources said Nabatanzi insists that Museveni, the NRM chief, instructed her to operate on Kyadondo Road because her work relates to the party affairs.
