THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) on Wednesday impounded fake and expired goods worth over sh40m, reports Madinah Tebajjukira.
Jackson Mubangizi, the head of market surveillance, said, “We are having bigger coverage than before especially in upcountry because traders in urban centres have spotted us, and are now dumping more expired and substandard goods in far areas where they think we can not reach.”
The impounded goods included fake electric Philips bulbs.
“There is an increase in supply of fake Philips bulbs on the market,” he said.
Mubangizi asked the public to desist from buying all Philips bulbs in blue and white packets.
He said only Philips bulbs in red packets, were genuine.
Mubangizi said some of the seized bulbs were reportedly ‘manufactured’ in Kikubo, a Kampala business centre.
He said investigations were going on to confirm the source.
Other impounded goods included tined sodas, beer, kimbo, royco, biscuits, quencher, and baby powder milk.
Increased supply of fake and substandard goods remains UNBS major challenge.
