THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates have emerged victorious in the youth elections in the central, north and western regions.

During the polls held at three regional centres on Monday, NRM candidates Denis Hamson Obua, Joseph Kasozi and Robert Kashaija were elected youth MPs for northern, central and western regions respectively.

The elections for the north youth MP were held in Lira, while those for the central youth MP took place in Masaka. The western elections were held in Mbarara town.

Kasozi, who has been a district youth councillor in Masaka, polled 267 votes, beating seven rivals including the Conservative Party (CP) candidate, Michael Makonzi, who was introduced to the voters by former Lubaga South MP Ken Lukyamuzi.

Makonzi did not get any vote as he was not a member of the electoral college.

Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and state minister for defence Ruth Nankabirwa camped at Hotel Brovad in Masaka town on Sunday to campaign for Kasozi.

DP’s candidate Donnan Kateregga got five votes, Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa of FDC got 33, while Shabban Mawanda, a DP supporter who stood as an independent, got 81 votes.

Susan Tiisa Mugwanga, the only female candidate, got 16 votes, Charles Jjagwe got one vote, while Paul Kato Mukasa got four votes.

After the announcement of the results, agents of the seven candidates stormed out of the polling hall and refused to sign the declaration forms. The agents claimed that there of the youth were not eligible to vote.

In Lira, the NRM candidate, Hamson Obua, beat five rivals including Juliet Oyulu (FDC) and Issa Otto (UPC) in a hotly contested race. Obua got 221 votes.

Independent candidate Francis Phillip Okello polled 100 votes, Buga Muzamil got 34 votes, Oyulu garnered only 32 votes, while Issa Otto trailed with 10 votes.

Engineer Badru Kiggundu, the Electoral Commission boss, supervised the election in Lira.

Aruu MP Samuel Odonga Otto, a senior FDC official, was barred from attending the election in Lira. Kiggundu ordered him out of the hall. Otto, who was the mentor of Juliet Oyulu, left the venue.

In Mbarara, NRM candidate Kashaija beat Thomas Tayebwa of FDC in an election that ended after midnight on Monday. Kashaija garnered 289 votes against Tayebwa’s 181 votes.

Tayebwa accused the National Political Commissar Dr Crispus Kiyonga of interfering in the elections. He told a press conference that he would contest the election results in court.
“I will challenge the results in the court of laws.”

Kiyonga visited the venue at about 9:30pm and left shortly after.
Out of 755 voters who registered, only 470 cast their voters, the rest abstained.
