THE Government has removed exclusive rights from MTN and utl to provide information communication technology services, a works minister has said.

The two national operators have been enjoying an exclusive privilege to offer communication services other than mobile telephony.

Such services include Internet bandwidth, VOIP (speaking over Internet) and VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), that is Internet satelite technology.

MTN and utl have been enjoying the five-year duopoly over Celtel.
The duopoly expired in June last year and the Government has been pondering whether to open the market to other service providers.

“Following the end of the exclusivity period and the development of the new telecommunications policy, the ministry is issuing new guidelines to be applied by the Uganda Communications commission (UCC),” said minister John Nasasira.

He called upon companies interested in investing in telecommunications to apply for a licence through UCC.

“The existing national operators no longer have monopoly,” he said.
