PARLIAMENT passed a resolution urging the Government to grant Entebbe Municipality city status and develop it to international standards.

A motion to pay tribute and in appreciation for the contribution of Entebbe Municipality mayor Stephen Kabuye was also moved on Thursday by outgoing Rwampara MP Amon Muzoora.

The motion, seconded by Wakiso district woman MP Rosemary Seninde, was passed without debate. Kabuye has been mayor for 13 years.

Muzoora said, “With the wonderful developments, facilities and infrastructure in the municipality and with its 10-year development plan, the Government should support it to become a fully fledged city to extend to Kampala and Wakiso districts.”

“The population and facilities in Kisubi, Abayita Ababiri gives an opportunity for Entebbe to be granted city status. But this will be in 10 years from now,” he added.

Muzoora said, “Having been elected vice-president of the International Council of Local Environment Initiative (ICLEI) and President of the Africa Section, government should put in a policy to support such gallant Ugandans who bring fame to this country,” he said.

ICLEI was set up by local governments to oversee the environment and its sustainability worldwide.

Dan Lutaaya, Entebbe senior assistant town clerk, said on Saturday, “if the next parliament puts into consideration the resolution financially, Entebbe will be able to fully prepare for the Commonwealth summit in 2007.”
