UGANDA Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship top contenders Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi and George Olayo renew rivalry in the Kinyara Golf Open that tees off in Masindi tomorrow.
Mbarara Golf Club’s Olayo (16 points) who trails Birungi by 2.5 points will be out to snatch his second victory of the season to reclaim top spot.
Olayo was positive he would defy the Kinyara course that is famed for taming visiting players.
“I have been playing well and I am confident about my prospects. I don’t know whether Birungi is on form as well but I really need a win and I will work for it,” Olayo said after a training session.
The tournament sponsored by United Assurance will have a professional category that will see stars Deo Akope, Charles Yokwe, Stephen Kasaija and Sadi Atibu battle for cash.
Meanwhile an East African Challenge Tour will be launched next month in an effort to boost professional golf in the region, adds William Muwonge.
The launch will coincide with the birth of the Tanzania Professional Golfers Association in Dar-es-Salaam.
Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) secretary Fabian Rwalinda revealed that a tournament will be held as part of activities for the launch in Tanzania.
