THE World Food Programme (WFP) has earmarked 900 metric tonnes of food worth $500,000 (sh910m) for distribution over a period of six months to internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are returning home.

World Food Programme Head of Office, Lira, Gilbert Buzu, said the food package targets 35,000 households who were living in Obim Rock, Abako and Alanyi camps but are voluntarily going back to their homes.

Food distribution under this programme started on May 19 at Obim Rock IDP camp in Apala sub- county, Lira district, where each household got enough food for three months.

“WFP shall continue to support IDPs voluntarily returning home and we believe that the three-month food package we distributed will support them,” Buzu said while supervising the distribution exercise.

About 30,000 households from Dokolo and Bata sub-counties earlier on got a similar package, in addition to farm tools and seeds.

WFP early this month gave farm tools and seeds worth millions of shillings to 12,000 IDP households to re-establish themselves after living in camps for nearly two decades.
