THE Electoral commission (EC) has appointed Friday, June 16 to Tuesday, June 20 for registration of village residents, youth and women in preparation for elections of Local Council 1 executive, youth and women council committees.

“All residents in a given village who are 18 years of age and above, including non-citizens, are members of the village council and qualify for this registration,” the chairman, Dr. Badru Kiggundu, said.

Registration will take place at the respective village/LC1 meeting place from 8:00am to 5:00pm on each of the appointed dates and will be conducted by a village registration official appointed by the returning officer, Kiggundu said in a June 1 statement. The registration official should be a resident of the village, he said.

All youth (persons aged 18 to 30 years) shall be registered in two different register books as village residents and youth. All female youth shall register in three different registers as village residents, youth and women. The village register will not bear the photograph of the voter.

The commission has also appointed June 18 to 27 as the campaign period for elections in areas where polls for directly-elected councillors and women councillors to Municipal Local Councils, women councillors to the sub-county local councils and directly-elected councillors to the sub-county local councils were not concluded.

EC vice-chairperson Sr. Margaret Magoba has advised the public and candidates to contact district EC officers for more information.
