REGISTRATION for local council elections ends tomorrow, with village council meetings, the Electoral Commission (EC) chairman, Eng. Badru Kiggundu (right), has said.

During the meeting, village residents will ascertain the register and make corrections where necessary, Kiggundu said in a statement yesterday.

Those who will not be registered by the end of the day will not participate in the elections, the EC vice-chairperson, Sr. Margaret Magoba, said.

“We shall not postpone the registration exercise. We have no money. We gave people five days to register and those who have not will not participate,” Magoba said.
Magoba, however, said they had not received feedback on how the exercise went.

“We are looking at 45,000 villages with about 500 residents each. So where do we get the money to extend the registration? It’s not economical. I think we should think about our country,” she added.

Several village councils in and around Kampala city have since June 16 been calling upon residents to register, using public address systems. But many had not turned up by yesterday, according to officials in five villages in Wakiso district.

Over 44,000 registration officials were recruited to register eligible voters for the exercise, the commission said.

EC Secretary Sam Rwakoojo recently said the polls, slated for August 10, would cost sh3.8b.
