PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has expressed great sorrow at the death of Justice Arthur Oder, saying the country had lost a distinguished judge.

“President Yoweri Museveni has learnt with great sorrow the death of Hon. Mr. Justice Arthur Haggai Okelo Oder, Justice of the Supreme Court.

“Justice Oder served with distinction as a member of Uganda’s Judiciary up to the time he died. He had earlier served as State Attorney in the justice ministry. He will be remembered for his work as chairman of the commission of inquiry into violation of human rights in Uganda from 1962 to 1986.

His work at the commission of inquiry was a significant contribution to the improvement in the handling of human rights in Uganda today,” the Media Centre said in a statement.

“Justice Oder has been a distinguished member of the Supreme Court since 1988. His passing away robs the country of his professional experience and guidance. The President wishes to express his condolences to his family at this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” it added.

Oder died in his sleep on Sunday night at home in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb, after watching the World Cup match between Portugal and Holland.

Oder is among the judges who handled the presidential election petition in 2001 and this year. In 2001, Oder was one of two judges who ruled in favour of Dr. Kizza Besigye and wanted the election results cancelled. He has died before delivering his full judgment in the 2006 election petition.

The funeral service will take at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero today at 11:00am, after which the body will lie in state at his house on Plot 1 Luthuli Close in Bugolobi. The body will leave for Aboke village in Apac district tomorrow and the burial will take place on Friday at noon.
