PARLIAMENT yesterday paid glowing tribute to fallen Supreme Court judge Justice Arthur Oder, praising him for his unrelenting fight for human rights.

Justice Minister Khiddu Makubuya, who moved the motion, noted among Oder’s contributions, his chairing of the 1986-88 commission of inquiry into the violation of human rights by past regimes.

Makubuya and Speaker Edward Ssekandi laid on table the report containing resolutions they made, that led to the formation of the Uganda Human Rights commission (UHRC). Makubuya described Oder as a nationalist, legal luminary and one of the first lawyers to emerge from Lango sub-region, who immensely inspired young Langi.

FDC’s Sam Njuba (Kyaddondo east) said Oder was always ready to help young lawyers and legal gurus.

Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi said Oder’s chairing of the 1986 commission of inquiry was fundamental in the setting up of UHRC, resulting from the human rights violations they unearthed.

Betty Amongi (Apac) said Oder never forgot his culture and background, even after rising so high.

Shadow health minister Francis Epetait called upon the Government to work towards improving health facilities in the country, such that Ugandans do not run abroad for treatment.
