KING’S College Budo and Budo Junior School yesterday celebrated 100 years, with emphasis on blending moral values with academics for continued excellence.

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who was the main celebrant, said when one is planning for eternity, teaching people about God and morality was vital.

The Rt. Rev. Edward Muhima, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, also emphasised morality during the thanksgiving service.

He said while many schools were focussing on academic excellence, Budo was emphasising academics and morality and called upon other schools to emulate this.

The celebrations that started with a service, were attended by old boys and girls and former teachers from the 1940s to date. The main events were held at the school’s Cricket Oval.

Dignitaries present were former president Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa, the Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki, his deputy Laeititia Kikonyogo and the Principal judge, James Ogoola, all former students.

Representatives of the family of the school founder, H.W. Weatherhead, representatives from the North America Old Budonian Association, those from the UK, South Africa and from many other countries were also present.
The Kabaka commissioned several facilities that included a clock that cost the UK Old Budonians Association about US$14,000 (about sh25m).

Several other donations were made for the completion of the school library block and the new swimming pool. The Old Budonian Association of Uganda handed over a cheque of sh35m.

There was standing ovation when Mzee Kaddu, who was present when the school was founded, matched through the oval to be accorded special recognition by the Kabaka.

The celebrations were characterised by entertainment from students of the senior, junior and nursery schools who staged a parade guided by the UPDF band.
