PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has lauded President George Bush for funding the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) intervention against mosquitoes to fight malaria in Uganda.

The President said this in a speech read by health minister Dr. Stephen Malinga at the launch of the IRS exercise at Maziba Primary School playground in Ndorwa East, Kabale district on Friday.

Wearing protective gear, Malinga and the area MP, Wilfred Niwagaba, sprayed two houses with Icon, at Maziba trading centre. The US agency for international development and World Health Organisation representatives witnessed the event.

“We thank president George Bush for considering Uganda as one of three African countries to benefit from the intervention,” Malinga said.

The project that will cost $1m intends to have 120,000 households sprayed.
The programme, implemented by RTI, began in June and will end in August.

Malinga, a medical doctor, said malaria continues to be the number one cause of ill health and number one killer disease of Ugandans.
