THE Cooperative Movement in Uganda has embarked on the task of promoting peace building as a means of uniting its members for development.
Leonard Msemakweli, the Uganda Cooperataive Alliance secretary general, said recently that some regions in the country had not experienced peace for several years, a fact, that he said, affected the populationthat had increasingly become poorer, retarding development.
in the process.
Msemakweli said through cooperatives, communities could be mobilised not only to build peace structures but also to encourage production and marketing of their farm produce at fairly good prices instead of being cheated by some unscrupulous businessmen.
“UCA has re-organised its structures from having members-based cooperatives to community-based cooperatives,” Msemakweli said.
He said with increased community participation, people begin to see themselves as having stakes in the development processes where they live.
“For that reason very few would want to create chaos that might put their interests in jeopardy,” Msemakweli said in his speech on the International Cooperative Day celebrations.
The celebrations were held at the Constitutional Square to mark 84 years of the existence of the International Cooperative Movement.
Janat Mukwaya, the minister of trade said the Cooperatives network was handy in facilitating peace building.
