Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi asked his housegirl to poison his wife, Robinah Kiyingi, before she was gunned down, the court heard yesterday.

A Police witness, Sgt. Karugaba, told the court yesterday that Nabbosa told them that when she refused to poison Robinah, Kiyingi stopped paying her salary and Robinah took over.

“Kiyingi contacted her on phone, asking her to poison Robinah, but she refused and that is when he stopped paying her salary. She said Robinah started paying her salary after she had revealed what had happened,” Karugaba said.

Karugaba said this during cross-examination by Kiyingi’s lawyer, Ddamulira Muguluma. Muguluma said the Police only fabricated evidence to pin Kiyingi on the murder.

Kiyingi and two other men, Charles Berwanaho and a Policeman, Bob Mugisha, are on trial over the murder. The court is presided over by Justice Opio Aweri. The State Attorney, Joan Kagezi, is prosecuting the case, while Macdusman Kabega, Muguluma and Rukikirengoma are defending the suspects.

Muguluma said the presence of Kiyingi’s telephone number in Atwine’s notebook should never have been construed to mean that they had criminal dealings. He said Atwine had that number because Kiyingi was a boss to his brother Charles Berwanaho.

But Karugaba said what he was telling the court was not a fabrication, because the Police obtained statements from the people he was talking about.

He said during investigations, he wondered what dealings Atwine, a soldier based in Gulu, had with Kiyingi in Australia.

Muguluma also asked Karugaba why he wrote an additional statement in June 2006, a year after the murder and after the trial had begun. He said it was only then that Karugaba brought up the issue of Kiyingi’s telephone number.

Karugaba, however, said he was in order to write an additional statement.

Muguluma also accused the Police of searching Berwanaho’s house during his absence, undressing his wife in the process and stealing her gold wedding ring and some other property. Karugaba denied this.
